Dust, Noise and Wind measurements. In real-time.

Environmental monitoring on mining sites

Mining generates dust and noise pollutions that impact health and environment. As we become more cognizant of the impact mining dust has on air quality, public protection agencies have passed regulations to decrease the impact mining may have on human health and the surrounding communities. Worker safety has long been at stake as well, and new Internet Of Things based practices have significantly improved the safety in mines. Mine operators struggle every day with meeting the demands of keeping their employees safe and continuing the be compliant.

To control dust emissions and nuisances, a mining company asked our local partner in Portugal to set up a complete monitoring system that meets the following requirements :
  • Real-time particulate matter (PM1, PM2.5, PM10) measurement
  • Noise level measurement
  • Wind speed and direction measurement
  • Full autonomous energy supply

The technical solution

  • Several outdoor air monitoring connected stations (EcomSmart), class 1 sonometers (EcomSono) and anemometers for wind speed and direction measurements are installed and deployed around the perimeter of the site, ensuring the particulate matter is not at dangerous levels when it leaves the property and makes its way into the environment,
  • Solar panels and external batteries are added to ensure energy self-sufficiency,
  • The services of the EcomSaaS web platform are available to monitor the environmental data via a secure protocol (SSL): data visualization, mapping, storage, direct download in .xlsx or .csv, remote control, warnings/alerts, analysis reports, exchange of data (FTP transfer, API link, database export).

Advantages

  • Easy and quick installation: light equipment and few maintenances needed
  • Remote control of the devices
  • Multi-parameter analysis on a single web platform
  • Energy self-sufficiency
  • Various communication modes
